The whole peninsula is limestone with fresh water running underneath it. Where the rock gave way you get a cenote: open like a swimming pool, half-roofed, or a proper cave lit by one shaft of daylight. Three very different swims, and the tour decides which you get.

Open pool, half-collapsed cavern, then a cave you enter by ladder. No ruins bolted on, so there is time to actually get in the water instead of photographing it from the steps.

Give the altitude a day before you climb anything. After that the city hands you pyramids an hour north, Frida Kahlo’s blue house in Coyoacan, painted boats on the last of the Aztec canals, and a taco stand that opens when most kitchens close.

Lucha Libre
Masked wrestling has been a national fixture since the 1930s and still fills Arena Mexico in the capital on a Friday night. The mask is the point: a luchador who loses his in a mask-versus-mask bout does not wear it again. Tickets are cheap, the crowd does half the work, and most tours fold in tacos and a beer on the walk over.

The Temazcal
A low domed sweat lodge heated with volcanic stones, used in Mesoamerica long before the Spanish arrived and still run by curanderos today. Sessions last around an hour in total darkness with herbs on the stones. It is genuinely hot and genuinely quiet, and nobody minds if you step out.

The Monarch Forests
Monarch butterflies fly down from Canada and the northern United States to a handful of fir forests in Michoacan and the State of Mexico, arriving around November and leaving in March. The reserves close outside that window. On a warm morning the branches move.

Whales, whale sharks, monarchs and turtles all keep different dates.
Mexico’s best days are seasonal in a way the brochures skate over. Humpbacks winter off Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos while grey whales fill the Pacific lagoons of Baja, both roughly December to April. Whale sharks gather in the Caribbean over the summer. Monarchs hold the fir forests from November to March, and turtles come ashore on both coasts through the warm months. Check the month before you commit to the coast.
